There is Nothing New under the Sun: Ukrainian Authors on the Epidemics of the 19th Century

2 лютого о 12.00 співробітник відділу шевченкознавства Дмитро Єсипенко виголосить доповідь "Немає нічого нового під сонцем: українські автори про епідемії ХІХ ст."
Покликання на вебінар:
Abstract: In 2020 perhaps for the first time in long decades if not centuries the concept of epidemic/pandemic has acquired a defining meaning in everyday life for residents of many countries worldwide. No wonder that literary works on the epidemics of the past, such as Daniel Defoe’s A Journal of the Plague Year, Thomas Mann's Der Tod in Venedig, or Albert Camus La Peste, became especially popular among readers in our time. Ukrainian literature has a number of interesting texts that vividly reflect the Zeitgeist and memorialize people who faced epidemics two hundred years ago. In this presentation, Dmytro Yesypenko will consider a few such poems and prose works, written by both renowned writers like Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, or Ol'ha Kobylians'ka and less-known authors. The list of considered issues includes the (un)naming of epidemics, universality of the plague image, and connections of literary texts with folklore and everyday life of that time. The presentation will study how literary texts cover both the breadth and depth of the phenomena, focusing on personal experiences and losses; how they reveal dramas of loneliness and orphanhood. Introduction of the works by Ukrainian authors of the 19th– early 20th century will be accompanied by an explanation of the historical context and particular parallels with the texts of other literatures.
