The main direction of the research activity of the Department is to study the Ukrainian literature of the 11–18th centuries.
Ukrainian Medieval Studies was influenced a lot by Shevchenko Scientific Society founded in 1892 in Lviv. Then as a prototype of the Department of Old Ukrainian Literature can be regarded some departments of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (that was the tittle of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1918 – 1921), such as the Archaeography Commission, the National Archive, the “Historical Society of Nestor the Chronicler” that was founded in 1873; the “Seminar of Russian Philology” in Kyiv National University, the “Society of Researchers of Ukrainian History, Literature, and Language” in Leningrad that was founded in 1923, and the “Society of Adherents of Ukrainian History and Language” were influential as well.
The date of foundation of the Department of Old Ukrainian Literature is 1927 when Academician M. Perets headed the “Commission of Old Ukrainian Literature”.
