Library stock
Library of T. H. Shevchenko Institute of literature of NAS of Ukraine is founded in 1926 and is a unique collection of belles-lettres texts and works on literary criticism in Ukrainian and other European languages.
The library has a 160-thousandth stock, consisting of books and booklets (18–21 c.), periodicals (19-21 c.), dissertations (from 1972) and abstracts of thesis (from 1949). Among the first arrivals there were complete sets of “Nova hromada” (New society) “Ukrainska khata” (Ukrainian hut), “Kyivska staryna” (Kyiv old times), “Sovremennik” (The Contemporary) (1839-1843).
The belles-lettres and literary criticism of the Ukrainian literature are most full presented. Purposefully and consistently collected it, no doubt, is a professional and even museum collection. So, works of the Ukrainian authors are begun with
"Aeneid", the library contains a lot of books edited in their life time of H. Kvitka-Osnovyanenko, Ye. Hrebinka, Т. Shevchenko, Marko Vovchok, I. Franko,
V. Vynnychenko, О. Oles, P. Tychyna, М. Rylsky, B. Lepky, Yu. Klen, V. Sosyura, M. Semenko, V. Svidzinsky, D. Falkivsky, M. Filyansky, Ye. Malanyuk, V. Stus, I. Svitlychny, М. Stelmakh, Ye. Hutsalo and other writers. A considerable amount of books is presented by the authors’ copies, received as
a gift, with the autographs of P. Кulish, О. Маkоvey, М. Sadovsky, Lesya
Ukrainka, B. Hrinchenko, М. Кotsyubynsky and other writers and their admirers.
Russian literature is full enough presented from 1782 in the library. Considerable
part of the stock is formed by foreign editions in language of original as well as
in translation. Literature of countries of Europe, North and South America, Asia,
Australia, as ancient (for example, the oldest edition in French is dated 1761), so the most modern. presented here.
Especially valuable is the stock of home and foreign dictionaries and encyclopedic
editions of the 19-th – 20-th c. from different spheres of social sciences.
Since literary criticism as a branch of science cannot develop in the narrow scopes of the only literary problems, the library has various editions of general humanitarian and cultural character: the publications are presented on the problems of the national and world history, philosophy, religious studies, aesthetics, linguistics, ethnology, folklore, study of art, sociology and other fields.

Monday - Friday from 10.00 to 17.00.
